What Can You Do To Protect Yourself From Colon Cancer?

Colon cancer is cancer of the large intestine (colon), and rectal cancer is cancer of the lowermost part of the large intestine. Medical professionals often refer these two conditions together as colorectal cancers. Most cases of colon cancer begin as small, noncancerous lumps of cells called adenomatous polyps. But, over time these polyps might develop into colon cancer. However, by following a healthy regime you could protect yourself from colon cancer. Here are few ways to maintain a healthy colon.

1. Get screened

Screenings are tests to detect cancer before the appearance of signs and symptoms. Colon screenings can often detect polyps and can be removed immediately before they turn into cancerous cells. Early detection and removal of polyps can completely prevent the development of this cancer.

2. Keep a check on your weight

Overweight or obesity increases the risk of colon cancer. Thus, it is important to maintain a healthy weight by eating right and exercising regularly.

3. Maintain a healthy diet

A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains decreases the risk of colon cancer while red meat and processed meats have negative effects in your colon.

4. Calcium, Vitamin D, and multivitamin with folate

There is a lot of evidence that suggests that getting enough calcium and vitamin D can protect you from colon cancer. In addition to this intake of standard multivitamin dose with folate can also lower the risk of colon cancer.

5. Exercise regularly

Physical exercise is beneficial in keeping your body fit and it has been proved beneficial to keep colon cancer at bay too. Any amount of physical activity is better than no activity at all. So choose what you enjoy like cycling, jogging, brisk walk, dancing and do it regularly.

6. Limit consumption of alcohol

Moderate drinking may be good for heart health but it can increase the risk of colon cancer. Well, in such a case, lower your alcohol consumption and for non-drinkers, there is no reason to start at the first place. Heavy drinking must be a total no-no.

7. Say no to smoking

Not smoking is the best thing you can do for your health because of the various ill effects that are attached to smoking. Aside from causing serious health hazards like heart disease, and stroke, smoking has been found to be the cause of 14 different types of cancers including colon cancer. So, if you are a smoker it is advisable to quit, and if you are a non-smoker then continue being so.

Aside from these measures, you must be aware of some of the unavoidable risk factors and take recommended measures to protect yourself from colon cancer. Older age especially above 60; family history of colon cancer, inflammatory bowel disease are some of the risk factors to look out for. Colon cancer is preventable, and by making few alterations in your lifestyle and health habits, you can protect and lower the risk of getting colon cancer.
